How online slots work: RTP, volatility and paylines

Slots are the most played casino game. They are also pure chance, so understanding how they work helps you play sensibly and avoid common myths.

How results are decided

Every spin is decided by a random number generator. Each spin is independent: a slot is never "due" a win, and it does not matter how many spins came before.

RTP: return to player

RTP is the share of all money bet that a slot pays back over a very large number of spins. A 96% RTP means 4% is kept by the house over the long run. It says nothing about a single session, where you can win much more or lose much more than the average.

Look for the RTP in the game's information screen.

Volatility

Volatility describes how wins are spread out. A low-volatility slot pays small wins often. A high-volatility slot pays less often but can pay big. Neither is better: it is a question of how you like to play and how much you can afford to lose.

Paylines, ways and features

  • Paylines or ways: the patterns on which matching symbols pay.
  • Wild symbols substitute for other symbols.
  • Scatter symbols often trigger free spins or bonus rounds.
  • Free spins and bonus features are part of the game and have their own rules.

Manage your money

Choose a budget before you start, choose a bet size that lets you play for a while, and stop when the budget is gone. Treat any win as a bonus, not as income.
